Project Ice Tramp - The MV Balto Expedition Yacht

The latest project in Ice Tramp's North Pole adventure, the MV Balto is probably the roomiest and most elegant small polar expedition yacht out there. It is also one of the the sturdiest, as its a former Finish government ice breaker, built as a Lloyd’s 1-A ice class ship. MV Balto is built out of high grade corten steel, ice-enforced for the complete length of the hull, and double bottomed with tanks placement. MV Balto has been fitted with a strong electric diesel propulsion, capable of maintaining versatile maneuvering and survey speeds with no vibration, ideal as film and photo platform.

The MV Balto boasts one sauna for guests and one for the crew; a richly appointed salon and a dining messroom with tailor made mahogany paneling, an ambient diesel burning stove, a carefully selected polar litearture library, a bar, card table, mess and mud room, a large office with an additional lounge aft of bridge, so that our guests can follow the captain's actions closely. She is fitted with large fine restaurant style open galley, where you can check on marvels of our chefs and sample freshly baked bread. There are many open and semi enclosed decks.

Furthermore the MV Balto is equipped with own metal, electronic and bio workshops; Spare parts and tool rooms, a large hold with submersible and other polar equipment carrying and deployment capability, a spacious brand new galley, including large storage and refrigeration rooms.

The MV Balto was operated in the Baltic sea, well maintained in Finnish government service until 2011/12. After that it worked as guard special purpose vessel in the Red Sea. It underwent a complete refit by Ice Tramp into a prime high latitudes expedition yacht, to meet highest global scientific and luxury travel specifications.

Ice Tramp supports both luxury maritime expeditions for private clients, and dedicated, professional scientific research in polar regions. The New York company currently owns and operates two vessels, named after the sled dogs of the "Nome serum" race fame -  the hard working, smaller Togo, and the more luxurious, larger brand new Balto. Togo is a converted North Sea trawler, and Balto is an ice breaker built and operated by the Finnish government.

Ice Tramp's unrivalled global reputation stems from the owners' and crew's incomparably vast experience in the Arctic, having completed numerous scientific and private expeditions. Over the past decade Icetramp's clients included the NYU, Environment Canada, NASA, JPL, U.S.NAVY UWC, UCI, T.V and film companies, as well as host of private agents.

"Ultimately, the Cape Race survey exceeded expectations and included major successes such as mapping to the faces of several major marine- terminating glaciers: Sermeq Silarleq, Kangigleq, Upernavik, Nunatakassap Sermia, Qeqertarsuup Sermia, Ussing Braeer, Cornell, Illullip Sermia, Alison, Hayes, Steenstrup, Dietrichson, Sverdrup, Nansen, Rink, Docker Smith, Gade, Carlos, Yngvar Nielsen Brae, Helland, and Savissuaq. Of these, collection of data in Upernavik Fjord stands apart as a particularly remarkable achievement given the exceptional challenge of safely navigating the extremely heavy ice conditions caused by the ord’s numerous calving glaciers.
